I mean, it's actually kind of interesting, to go through Durarara!!'s dub and realize that the quality of the performances is almost directly proportional to the experience level and body of work each VA possesses. Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works Season 2 (Dub) Episode 13 English Dubbed at KissAnime. Maybe I'm supposed to believe that Reed was spending all her time directing him while leaving Johnny Yong Bosch and Michelle Ruff to their own slightly off-base devices while Darrel Guilbeau and Bryce Papenbrook miscast themselves, but that's awful in a completely different way.
Crispin Freeman gives easily the best performance among the Durarara!! cast, but it's because he knows how to play an energetically awesome badass while also having the wherewithal to make use of his own range for some of Shizuo's more quiet (heh) moments or narration bits. Performances from VAs in general tend to be dialed down a couple of notches, which becomes extremely noticeable during scenes of excitement (Higurashi, for being what it is, ended up with a dub that was disappointingly mellow).įor better or worse (though mostly "worse"), there are good performances and some really standout efforts from certain VAs in Reed's dubs, but they seem to occur in spite of directorial efforts, rather than as a result, simply because these are talented VAs and some of them have been doing this for a while so they know what needs to happen. Shiro Emiya has become a Magi, a sorcerer who has summoned a 'Servant' named Saber to stand together in the ultimate test of sorcery and magic: the Holy Grail War. Characters will respond inappropriately to one another, as if one VA was given a completely different impression of a scene than the other VA involved. Theatrical Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works. The biggest problem is that there's a lot of inconsistency and disjointedness that comes from the piecemeal method of dubbing here Stateside, which the director is supposed to alleviate, but in Reed's case there doesn't seem to be much of that going on. I largely disagree, but to each their own I suppose.I've encountered at least a couple episodes, dubbed, of each project she's directed, while having listened to several in their entirety (Durarara!!, Higurashi, Heat Guy J, Hanaukyo Maid Team, among others) due to watching with friends who prefer dubs in general. Her directed dubs, as recently as Durarara!! from Aniplex of America, have been pretty uneven and lifeless, without exception. Kristi Reed is badly incapable of directing a cast towards a solid and engaging end result.
